One Hell of a Trip

ABOUT ME

Hi!

I’m Simon, thank you for visiting my website. I’m from the Czech Republic and I spent the last 4 years studying mechanical engineering. In 2015, exactly a year before finishing my master’s I realized that I wasn’t sure where I was going. Well, looking back, I knew this fact for quite a while, but only when this alert of “running out of time” appeared it started to scare me. I started to think, I couldn’t find in myself that enthusiasm and passion I had seen in my schoolmates, especially one who not only had huge ambitions but already was involved in working for a peak company in the field (good luck buddy). Then I tried this experiment, I imagined where I might be in 10 years with doing what I was doing and asked myself whether I liked that image or not. The answer was this: I wasn’t regretting choosing the field itself, I just didn’t yet get to the point where I dreamt big enough and had goals big enough to continue. Without those, there cannot be any desire, which usually pushes you to create plans/steps, or whatever you call it. (Having a plan is like having a map in a foreign city, even if you are not familiar with it you can reach the destination)

I wanted to get new perspectives, learn something new, become better in languages, meet new people and perhaps just take a break from that lined up life. What a better way than travelling there is, when is there going to be a better time to make some mistakes than now? Never, so I interrupted school, packed my backpack and left home to travel the world.

On a trip like this there is always certain amount of things that you can, or perhaps want to, plan for and there is always the unexpected. So when I was planning I had an idea of what I’m looking for but it’s also important to leave an open space, and leave room for those unexpected things to happen because those actually end up making unforgettable memories and that’s what keeps life exciting. So, I left everything as open as I could, picked destinations and the rest will just happen.

I’m leaving Canada this September and the plan is to stay on the road for the next 11 months. The main focus of this trip is to volunteer all around South America, in Central Africa, and in Southeast Asia in an attempt to meet interesting people, learn new skills and capture and share stories. This journey is also not about finding the perfect beaches. It is more about experiencing the world in all its varieties.
